Gardening isn’t just about plants.
This is a polyphemus moth or Anthera polyphemus whose cocoon was found on a beech tree at Wave Hill. It hatched yesterday in the potting shed and is now outside on a beech tree again. I think she’s female - you can tell based on the antenna which are less bushy in females. If there are any males in the area, they’ll be attracted to her pheromones, they’ll mate and she’ll lay eggs on the beech tree.
Her wingspan was about five inches (I’m notably bad at estimating distances, so take this with a grain of salt. It all comes from learning inches and centimeters at the same time. I wish the US would switch to the metric system so I could be confused about a single set of units).
